Astrapak, in partnership with SmartMatta, win prestigious Enviro Award

Astrapak, in SMART partnership with SmartMatta, are saving the planet one container at a time and in doing so, were awarded for their environmental excellence at the prestigious 2016 Logistics Achiever Awards, held at Montecasino in Gauteng on 13 October.

Astrapak’s journey with SmartMatta, a division of Barloworld Logistics, began a little over two years ago, when they issued a request for tender for a sustainable waste management system. Through a selection process, SmartMatta was selected and their holistic waste management processes were implemented throughout the Group.

“Partnering with SmartMatta was the perfect operational and strategic fit,” said Claire Spring, Astrapak Group Procurement Manager. “The benefit of the partnership is evident and they have helped us to effectively manage our waste streams, recycle better, send less waste to landfill and lower our carbon footprint.”

SmartMatta’s processes aided Astrapak in facing various challenges, allowing the Group to “re-think and re-design a total waste management solution to reach zero waste to landfill goals and objectives”.

Amongst various differentiators, SmartMatta offered a national footprint and was therefore able to accommodate all Astrapak’s sites. With these solutions available, SmartMatta offered both an operational and strategic fit with Astrapak Group’s requirements. The waste recorded reflected the percentage to landfill, which facilitated enabled and targeted reduction. In terms of record keeping, SmartMatta has on online portal, which Astrapak accesses directly in order to obtain information to documentation required.

“SmartMatta is a dynamic company with innovative technologies. Jointly we are integrating environmental thinking into the supply chain resulting in a reduction of total environmental impact and contributions to sustainability performance,” said Spring.

SmartMatta National Sales Manager, Michelle Kemp, said: “Our partnership with Astrapak began by understanding the waste that they were generating and we put procedures in place on how they could optimise their waste stream.”

The way forward, Kemp explained, has many aspects and in particular helps Astrapak to achieve their goal of zero waste to landfill, as well as helping customers on a journey to make products more recyclable and reusable, bringing wasted resources back into the manufacturing processes.

Speaking about the award, SmartMatta Managing Director Marilize Worst said that the essence of the award is to recognise the progress that has been made so far since the partnership began.

“When we began our partnership with Astrapak, we put the infrastructure (such as recycling stations, recycling bins and porters) in place and managed the collection of the waste. We also supplied a full back end documentation guide and reporting processes. With a focus on the error rate, actual percentages and a strong reporting process of the scrap rate allowed Astrapak to concentrate on what needed to be done to improve their score. The collected product is delivered to our depot where we measure it all and compile our reports. We have a very transparent view, which is backed by all the necessary legislative documents.”

SmartMatta’s smart solutions and tools have helped Astrapak to achieve their environmental goals by effectively transforming waste into a sustainable resource.
